Vera, I was one of the first to recommend the portrait because I liked it. I would have liked it even more if the background wasn't flat and impersonal, but rather hinted at a wall of dark wood or planks. Then the sheepskin coat would have seemed more appropriate. But these are just thoughts out loud, which the author is free to ignore, as there's always room for improvement in a good photo 😃

Nikolay Semenov, thank you, Nikolay, for your appreciation, and I appreciate your comment. I largely agree with you about the background. Certainly, the background plays a large role in a portrait. Unfortunately, I didn't have such a background, and I didn't want to include it—it would have turned out to be a collage. Here, the image was conceived as a merchant after bargaining. Something "commercial" should have been placed behind him (or next to him, increasing the canvas size). Then it would have been perfect. But what is, is, and although Victor (the model) did a pretty good job, IMO. Thank you again for your opinion and discussion of the interesting aspects of the shoot.

Vera, this is a beautiful portrait! Regarding the background... is a background this large really necessary? Excessive details will only draw attention away. A solid background with some soft highlights is the best solution. I'm missing some "air" on the right side of this shot; the gaze and head angle require it.

Vladimir Bayker, NMW, Nikolai Semenov was right about the background. Low-lit objects could have been properly blurred, and then they would have complemented the image. Well, I completely agree with you about the "air." Even though the pose in this portrait is classic, I really needed to add some space. I'm very grateful to you, as it's not often you get constructive advice on your work. It was a pleasure talking with you.

Great comments. A model of proper, professional discussion of photography work...
I wish there were more like this on Photocentra. If I ever have the chance to shoot a portrait in such a setting, I'll definitely take my colleagues' comments into account.
And to you, Vera, continued success! I'm glad you've returned after a significant break. I missed your presence and your work.

Vera Ketova,
I think it's a pretty decent photo portrait. The background is quite good, but if you put something out of the ordinary (??!) in the background, it could easily become banal. After all, it's a photo portrait, not a painting. I'm sure you nailed it.

The picture isn't high-contrast, allowing you to easily lighten the background and clothing with simple tools like shadow/highlight (~7/2), without over-lightening the volumes on the left.
Like "Dostoevsky" has become noticeably better, in Perovsky's style, with
And even better.

Evgeny (Evgsaln), You know, Evgeny, I always have doubts about the background, not only during the shooting process but also during editing. After all, the background is a significant addition to the image. It can either emphasize the idea or completely ruin it. Thank you for your support and appreciation of my work. I'm glad to see you on my page.

Nikolay Semyonov, I get it, Grandpa Kolya, you and your friend are playing a game here. Who can get the river first? How wonderful, it brings tears to my eyes! But you always keep a reserve airfield for yourself, just in case those guys come and write something. Then you write about the background and everything else. You're young, what can I say? I'd like to send you all to Holland. For Man has spoken, let there be a word - yes-yes, no-no. And the rest is all from the hundred!

Vera Ketova,
Vera, there's always a choice, no matter where. The same applies to choosing a background. But that's your right, your choice. If you look at the image in the preview and at the first zoom level shown on the website, the photo is quite amorphous, as mentioned above. But if you expand the image, the background works perfectly. And for me, it's quite sufficient. The portrait is emotional and tonally consistent. Best of luck!

Aleksey Prokudin58, I knew another illiterate guy here on the site, but he hardly followed me (I'm not a big bird to follow) and therefore didn't jump to conclusions about who to recommend and who not. And, by the way, he didn't change his nicknames, like gloves or socks. And I'm not hiding, as you might have noticed. I would always be happy to account for my actions to him, but he didn't ask.

Vera Ketova,
Vera, take the advice about increasing the space on the right (which follows from photographic rules) with caution. You can increase the space, but the portrait will lose its tension. The portrait will become more tranquil. Well, if you do increase it, you only need to do so very slightly. That's just my impression, although that's just my perception. And forgive me for interrupting – Volodya Baiker is undoubtedly a master.

Evgeny (Evgsaln), yes, if you increase the space, then certainly only slightly, i.e., let's say: to extend the model's gaze. And please, no need to apologize; we're having a normal creative conversation. Thank you, Evgeny.

Vera Petri, YandexPhotos are sneaky, of course. They leave a link, not to the author, but to the FC website. If you follow this link, you can see the author. But when you look at the preview, there are no links. They are known thieves.

Vera Petri, I'll add a technical comment. You can download photos from absolutely any site. Technically, you can only disable right-clicking on a photo so that the "Save As..." menu doesn't appear, which is what 500px does. We had some exceptions, but they've now been removed. As for Yandex, saving photos programmatically is no problem at all for them.

Vera Ketova, if we consider the frame as a classic portrait, then at this size, or even larger, the background is blurred and therefore lacks meaning. But if you approach the shot from the perspective you envisioned, it would be a genre photograph, where the setting is crucial. Then there's no need to blur the background, but horizontal cropping and a corresponding setting are desirable, which takes a lot of time and effort to create, but the result is rather questionable. There's no guarantee that this shot, transformed into a genre shot, would benefit from any special treatment.

Vladimir Bayker, thank you very much, Vladimir! You've really put everything in its place. I'd thought about the time and effort involved in setting up the shot before, so I decided to go the easy route, and the result is a classic portrait.

Evgeny (Evgsaln), the model lacks tension; both the gaze and the pose suggest calm, so the tension is purely compositional. I'll express my humble opinion: given the frame size shown on the website, I would add 72 pixels to the right and crop 90 pixels from the bottom, but that's just my opinion.

Liliya M, it's certainly up to you to ignore it, but people are making money from your photos, and quite a bit at that. There's now a league of international lawyers for the defense of the AP, where you can file a claim by presenting only a photo. They handle the rest themselves, and the money is transferred to your account. I imagine they're also making a profit. I read about this league on VKontakte.
