The picture is beautiful. But!!! It's terribly inconvenient to print with cuffs, the double-glazed windows could have been covered up, and the butterfly is posing for the photographer, but it doesn't make the writer look careless at all. The result is a nearly successful production, but not a lively genre shot. If the details had been thought through, it would have been a movie. As it is, it's a good idea, a high-quality photo, but not fully realized.
The job description—"writer"—and the comment "old hotel"—narrow the subject. And inconsistencies, unreliability, and stereotypes emerge—from the perspective of a "theater and film artist." But if they'd simply called it, say, "At the Hotel," a timeless space would have emerged... And the only thing better would have been the toning. No color. It's a completely sketchy picture.
I'd also like some smoke.
